Commentary:
The month of October is usually associated with market crashes, such as the Panic of 1907, Stock Market Crash of 1929, 1987 Black Monday, 1997 Asian Financial Crisis and the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. Thankfully, this October passed without much fanfare.
Checking on the benchmarks, the S&P 500 Index bucked the negative sentiment and inched up to close 0.9 percent MoM. The tech-focused NASDAQ 100 Index faced heavy offloading and sank 6.7 percent MoM. The local Straits Times Index also plunged 5.3 percent MoM, whereas the iEdge SGX Next 50 Index encountered a similar fate, declining 6.8 percent MoM.
The U.S. Federal Reserve chose to keep the benchmark interest rate on hold for now. However, traders are betting a three-to-one chance that the Fed will hike interest rate during the December FOMC meeting, according to CME FedWatch.
As stock prices retreated, I drew down my dry powder and accumulated more shares in Powermatic Data, Credit Bureau Asia, HRnetGroup and Kimly for my CDP portfolio. Not big bites though, just nibbles here and there.
At the same time, I increased my position in NetLink NBN Trust for my SRS portfolio. With the near-term prospect of interest rate hike, REITs and business trusts are experiencing institutional selling pressure. This works to my advantage as I begin utilizing my SRS savings. Eventually, I will sell the other stocks in my SRS portfolio and hold only NetLink NBN Trust. This is a strategic decision to re-align my SRS investment mandate over the long term.
Time flies. We are down to the last two months of the year. Looking forward to start clearing my leave soon.
Take care!
